MacHale Rovers are the last women left standing from the Mayo in club action - the amalgamation of Crossmolina, Lahardane and Ardagh will be flying the flag in Didsbury in Manchester on Sunday when they take on All Britain Champions Oisín in the Ladies Football All Ireland Junior Quarter Final.

Last Saturday, like many of our readers, I put aside to watch two main items on television : 1) the rugby quarter-final, Ireland versus the All Blacks, and 2) the proceedings in Westminster when Boris Johnson would endeavour to bring in his settlement with Europe.

On December 7 1922, Pádraic Ó Máille TD and his friend Sean Hales TD of Cork, walked out of a hotel on Ormonde Quay, by Dublin’s river Liffy. They just had lunch, and were on their way back to the Dáil in Leinster House, a short drive away. Ó Máille, Galway city and Connemara’s first TD, had been appointed Leas Ceann Comhairle (deputy speaker). As they reached their car a gunman stepped forward and opened fire. Both men were hit, but Hales was bleeding profusely. Although seriously injured Ó Máille managed to get Hales into the car and drove to the nearest hospital, where he collapsed, and died.

Galway’s novel street entertainment has helped the city be named the fourth best city in the world to visit in 2020 by Lonely Planet – coming in ahead of cities like Vancouver and Denver. The accolade comes just two months before controversial busking bye-laws are introduced in the city. Michael Moloney has been living and breathing Galway Racecourse for many years now. When he was knee high to a grasshopper, he used to cycle around the course, while his father John, looked after the running of the course.
